Bonsai!

Went to the Bonsai show today.  Here are some pics.  Very cool displays, and had a good time learning from the some of the club members.  One of the trees there is probably 800 years old!

50th Anniversary!

The 50th Anniversary was great!  Music, food, tram rides, tours, and of course, the Garden itself.  It seemed Nature herself knew, and put on a spectacular display.

I'll try and get some pictures online soon.  Keep an eye on the calendar too, for some very special events

Don't Miss the 50th Anniversary Celebration!

Don't miss the 50th Anniversary Celebration at the Garden!  Saturday, April 17, 2010 from 9am to 5pm.  The Spring Plant sale will also be happening that day!  Bring the family, free admission!   Photo courtesy Laurel Woodley

Spring is in the Air!

The weather is warming; the days have been just beautiful!  The air is balmy and the sun is warm.  You can really tell in the garden that things are popping.  Flowers are blooming, birds are chirping, bees are busy collecting nectar and doing their pollination thing.  If you haven't been for a visit in a while, time to do so now!

Coral Tree Removed

A 40ft Erythrirna caffra, Kaffirboom Coral Tree, was removed from the Children's Garden.  A fungal virus attacked this tree and it was dying.  We are sad to see this massive tree go.

SPRING IS FAST APPROACHING!

The official date is March 20, 2010.  Although we still may have rainy days, the soil is warming.  The warmth from the sun feels fabulous!  Make a trip to the garden to witness the micrale of spring.

Cactus Garden: Euphorbia ingens uproots due to saturated grounds after heavy rains.

On February 15, 2010 after continued, heavy rains, a very large Euphorbia ingens, uprooted and crashed to the ground.  This old-timer will be missed!  It's thought this giant succulent was planted in the garden in the mid 80's, making it somewhere around 25 years old!  Extreme care was exercised in the removal due to the milky sap that can be quite skin irritating.  Just ask SCBG's Manny Luna, shown here, next to the giant Euphorbia.  Cuttings were saved to start this plant growing again.  Thanks, Laurel for the great photo.

Cherry Trees in Bloom Now!

The cherry trees and other ornamental fruit trees are in glorious bloom right now!  Come and see the spectacular show!
