Sponsored by the South Coast African Violet Society.
One of the most popular of houseplants, African Violets bloom almost continually.  This year's theme is "Spring Celebrations with African Violets".  Pots, fertilizer, soil and other supplies will be available for sale.  Gini McCanne of Violet Perfection by Gini will be offering plants for sale.

Dahlias are a very diverse and beautiful flower.  Come and learn about the care and cultivation of this garden beauty.  Roots will be available for purchase.

Did you know that all cactus are succulents, but not all succulents are cactus?  Impressive species grown by society members will be on display.  Friendly, knowledgeable society members will be on hand to answer your questions.  Plants, pots, and potting material will be available for purchase.

Back by popular demand, our Member's Preview Night affords you the opportunity to choose the best selection of plants offered.  Enjoy wine and light snacks while visiting with your fellow gardening enthusiasts.  RSVP to the Foundation Office by April 9, 2010.  Tickets are $15 per person, in advance and $20 at the door.

17              SCBG 50th Anniversary Open House    Saturday                9am - 5pm
                      Hosted by L.A. Supervisor Don Knabe, in conjunction with L.A. Department of Parks and Recreation, and South Coast Botanic Garden Foundation 
Join us at the garden for a day of activities as we celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the founding of South Coast Botanic Garden .  Activities will include Children's activities, Community Information Booths, Food, Music, Garden Tours, our Spring Plant Sale, and Art.

Hosted the Needle Artists by the Sea
This show of variousstitched art will be on display in the hall.  Display categories include petit point, counted thread, surface embroidery, beads, lace, clothing embelishment, and mixed media.

2            Epiphyllum Show & Sale                Sunday                    9am - 4pm 
Sponsored by the South Bay Epiphyllum Society
The origin of the epiphyllum has never been fully understood.  The blooms are very fragrant and come in many colors.  Epi society members will be on hand to answer your questions.  Plants will be available for purchase.
  

9               Palos Verdes Symphonic Band                           2:30pm - 4:30pm
                     Mother's Day Concert

What a treat for mom!  Bring mom to visit the garden and then stop in the hall to hear the band.  Mom will be delighted!  Picnic tables are located outside the garden gates.  (This is not a meadow/picnic event and there is no additional charge for this concert.)  


15 & 16          Geranium Show & Sale             Saturday & Sunday       9am -  4pm 
Sponsored by the South Bay Geranium Society
Geranium is a genus of 422 species of flowering plants also known as cransbill.  Originating in South Africa, true Geranium are cold-hardy plants, unlike their hybridized cousins Pelargonium.  Will include a lecture on the care and cultivation at 11am. 

22 & 23            Bonsai Show                  Saturday & Sunday                9am - 4pm

Bonsai is the art of dwarfing trees or plants and developing them into aesthetically appealing shapes by grooming, pruning, and training them in containers according to prescribed methods.  Come and see how this unique art form has transformed plants.
 


JANUARY 2010 

3           Rose Pruning Demo                Sunday                         noon - 3pm 

Sponsored by the South Coast Rose Society.  Meet for this demonstration in the in the Rose Garden.  Learn how to properly prepare your roses for the winter to ensure lovely blooms next spring.  Dress appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.  In case of inclement weather the demo will be held in the Frances Young Hall.
 

10        Fruit Tree Pruning Demo        Sunday                          1pm - 4pm 

Mr. Rick Wheeler, Certified Arborist, and owner of Island Mountain Tree & Plant Service will speak about pruning your fruit trees for the winter.  This is Rick's 23rd year of lecturing at the garden.  Meet in the Frances Young Hall for the lecture and question & answer session.  After that you will head out to the orchard for a hands-on demonstration.  Please dress appropriately for the weather and wear comfortable shoes.
