Instructor: Julie James, Certified Herbalist, Master Gardener with Green Wisdom Herbal Studies

Julie James is an herbalist and director of Green Wisdom Herbal Studies, providing herbal education opportunities for people all over Southern California. After over two decades of formal study, apprenticeship, consulting, and teaching, she now focuses on expanding understanding of traditional Western herbalism, deep plant love, medicine-making, wellness and holistic nutrition.
A 4-part series to deepen your understanding and use of herbs and foods to support health and healing. Some basic knowledge of herbalism is helpful in this series.
Class 1: Plant Chemistry (For the non-chemist)
Making herbal medicines requires an understanding of the chemistry of plants, but you don’t need a degree to understand these concepts! Introduction to the primary classes of compounds in plants, how they act in the body, and how best to extract and use them. Will include hands-on medicine making to demonstrate the effects of different solvents such as oil, vinegar, glycerin and alcohol.
Class 2: Common Conditions and Protocols
A comprehensive look at a wide range of conditions and how to best support health and promote healing. From Anxiety to Zits, we’ll discuss appropriate herbs, nutrition, diet and lifestyle habits for over 20 common health issues.
Class 3: Herbal First Aid
You will create your own herbal first aid kit in this workshop, covering the most common acute care needs, from cuts and scrapes to burns, bruises, upset stomach and pain. You’ll go home with everything you need to upgrade and update your home first aid kit, too.
Class 4: Southern California Native Plants for Health and Healing
We will hit the trails for the first half of this class, looking at some beautiful examples of our regional healing plants. Afterward, we’ll meet in an outdoor classroom to propagate and plant a variety of these native herbal allies, to add to our home gardens.
