Banana

Musa acuminata is a herbaceous perennial reaching up to 20 feet.  The pseudo-stem is made up of layers of leaf sheaths with some individual leaves up to 12 feet long.  Banana will do well in full sun or partial shade and requires moderate water.  The leaves are easily torn when exposed to wind and the whole plant is frost sensitive.  The inflorescence is horizontal or pendant, forming a long stalk with flowers at the apex and fruit forming at the base.  Photos by Laurel Woodley
